There is something sacred about stories.

For generations, villages gathered around a burning fire as elders shared tales of history, culture, triumph, and survival. Those fires were more than warmth, they were classrooms, archives, and sanctuaries of wisdom.

This week, I found myself sitting at a different kind of fire.

I had the privilege of sharing lunch with some of our nation’s most historic stalwarts, pioneers whose lives have shaped the discourse we now inherit. As each one spoke, I felt, the quiet awe of listening to elders pass down more than knowledge. They were passing down conviction.

Umama Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, resolute and unshaken, reminded me that women must never shrink themselves in decision‑making spaces. In her words, “You must believe in yourself.” Her voice carried the weight of generations who fought to be heard.

Ambassador Dr Chiwayo Lassy offered me a masterclass in global foresight, sharing the story of China’s intentional 100 year planning and the honour they give to senior citizens as custodians of knowledge. His reflections were a reminder that nations rise when they preserve wisdom.

Prof Kwazi Majola spoke with clarity and compassion about the importance of international exposure, while also unpacking the harsh realities our students sometimes face in the workplace. His words were both a warning and a call to action.

And lastly, though certainly not least , Miss South Africa 2010, Madame , Bokang Montjane-Tshabalala now the license holder of both Miss World SA and Miss Universe SA, shared a story of purpose that refuses to be silenced. She said, “Wherever you have an itch, remember it will never go away until you scratch it. Because when purpose calls, you answer.” Her journey is a testament to courage, reinvention, and destiny.

Each conversation was rich, layered, and deeply human. I felt as though I was sitting around the fire of our times, listening to the stories that will one day become the folk tales of future generations.

These are the stories that now find their way into the books we write, the speeches we deliver, and the work we commit ourselves to.

I remain profoundly grateful for mentors who continue to open doors and usher me into rooms where wisdom is not only shared ….. it is lived.
